It's All in the Detail
Redecorating the walls and hanging new curtains creates the backbone of a room's design, but it is the detail that breathes new life into a scheme; the trims on the cushions, the lamps on the tables, pictures on the walls or the rugs on the floor. Each of these touches help create the character, the movement and the personality of the space.
Adding interest
Sourcing items to give character to a room can be a challenge. Some sort of wall art is a good starting point as this will help add colour or interest to a space. Old frames can make simple pieces more interesting, and repetition of one sort of style frame is good for a collection of varied sized photographs. The most important thing to get right is display and sometimes it’s useful to get help with this. Hanging images in groups can give more impact and even if the individual pieces are small they can collectively fill a large space.
Throws, cushions and rugs combine to make a room more homely and comfortable as well as more interesting. The fabric absorbs noise which is very important, particularly if you have wooden floors. The addition of texture and unusual colour combinations can draw out otherwise unnoticed shades in the decorations. Combine a mixture of sizes of cushions on a sofa so that each one plays a part. Don’t forget about using small oblong shapes or round cushions. They don’t have to be square.
Remember: when grouping decorative items it is helpful to stick with odd numbers, unless you are wanting symmetry. A row of three always looks better than two.
